The short answer: there was no decisive platform winner

In this Calgary sample, WordPress held a small benchmark-score edge over Wix, but the difference was not strong enough to declare WordPress the universal SEO winner. The median was 87 for WordPress and 86 for Wix. Squarespace had the highest median at 89, although each platform served a different mix of businesses and website types.

The better conclusion is that the way a site is built, written, maintained, and optimized mattered more than the platform name by itself.

How the comparison was kept fairer

The platform table includes only websites with a single high-confidence CMS detection. Repeat scans were reduced to one latest compatible result per hostname, and websites without a usable benchmark score were left out of the score comparison.

The raw WordPress-minus-Wix mean difference was 1.5 points. Its 95% uncertainty range ran from roughly 0.2 points in Wix's favour to 3.2 points in WordPress's favour. An industry-adjusted comparison produced a similar 1.6-point estimate, but its uncertainty also crossed zero. In plain language, the data does not show a clear score winner.

Wix was faster in the mobile lab test

Wix had a median mobile Lighthouse performance score of 44, compared with 37 for WordPress and 28 for Squarespace. None of those medians was strong, but Wix performed better in this particular controlled test.

That does not mean every Wix site is fast or every WordPress site is slow. Theme weight, image sizes, apps, plugins, tracking scripts, hosting, and maintenance can move performance dramatically within the same platform.

WordPress gives more control, which cuts both ways

WordPress can support detailed service pages, flexible schema, strong internal linking, and careful technical cleanup. It can also accumulate heavy plugins, duplicate features, oversized images, and old templates when nobody is maintaining the setup.

For a Calgary service business, WordPress is a strong fit when the company needs deeper content, location pages, ongoing local SEO work, or custom conversion paths—and has a plan to keep the site healthy.

Wix and Squarespace can handle the basics well

A well-built Wix or Squarespace site can have clear titles, headings, service pages, local signals, schema, fast inquiry paths, and strong visual trust. Platform defaults may handle some basics automatically, but they cannot decide whether the content clearly explains the business.

The limitation usually appears when the business needs deeper control, more complex content structure, specialized integrations, or a large amount of ongoing SEO work.

Choose the platform around the work you need to do

If the current website can support clear service pages, useful local content, clean metadata, business-specific schema, good mobile performance, and an easy contact path, changing platforms may not be the best first move.

Start with a website review. A focused cleanup can often deliver more value than rebuilding a workable site solely because another platform has a stronger reputation.
